PH3’s Craft Brewery Tour: Broken Cauldron Brewery & Taproom
The PH3 Orlando craft brewery tour continued this month as we visited the unique Broken Cauldron Brewery & Taproom.
The story of how it came to be is rather unheard of but originally, there were two separate businesses — Black Cauldron Brewery and Broken String Brewery. Both were trying to secure suitable locations, so together they came up with an interesting solution. Now they operate under one roof, combining forces as Broken Cauldron, but keeping their respective separate identities should things change in the future.
Location Location Location
Located on Church Street in downtown Orlando, they’ve now become the official game-day venue for Orlando City Soccer Club’s supporters group The Rukus, thanks to their ideal location and extensive property that allows for tailgating.
The PH3 team strolled in on a Friday afternoon and the very first thing we noticed was the graphic novel-esque wall paintings of musical legends, from John Lennon and Bob Marley to Prince and David Bowie.
We also couldn't miss the moving wall art tribute to PULSE Nightclub. Upon taking our seats at the bar, we were greeted by Charles Frizzell, Co-Owner & Head Brewer at Broken Strings. He gave us further insight on how Broken Cauldron was born, “We knew each other through mutual friends, and knew of each other’s struggles to find the right location. We stumbled upon this building on Craigslist and it had everything we needed, infrastructure-wise. So we just decided to combine resources.”
The place seemed pretty mellow, but Charles said they make up for it three-fold on game-days.
As with our last visit, we chose to sample the best of what they had to offer with a few beer flights. The three that rose to the top are:
- Liquid Vinyl Black IPA, 7.1% ABV, 70 IBU (Broken Strings) - A black IPA with a full hop aroma, which was surprisingly not too bitter and is currently being served at the Ritz-Carlton Orlando Hotel.
- Ruckus Red American Amber Ale, 6.5% ABV, 35 IBU (Black Cauldron) - A fan favorite (hence the name), with an unforgettable bite to it.
- White Room Belgian Witt IPA, 7.1% ABV, 70 IBU (Broken Strings) - Holds a great Belgian witt taste with an IPA slant. Quite refreshing...aaaahhhhhh.
Central Florida Ale Trail
We were also introduced to the Central Florida Ale Trail here, where by visiting the local breweries on the map (getting stamped), you’ll be rewarded with a special growler and receive $1 off fills at any participating brewery.
So if you’re looking for an Orlando City game-day place to be, there’s no better venue than here, where the Rukus stage their march to the match from the Cauldron!
